clash of champions

In honor of tonight’s Clash of Champions being held at the University of Oregon’s Matt Court, I thought I’d share some out takes from a recent photo shoot Nadal did for Armani. Ooooh la la!

Though I’m pretty sure he’ll be wearing more clothing, I’m excited to see Rafa play in the exhibition with Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka. The event is definitely a gift! Not only will I get to see them play tennis (a nice treat since I’m missing the Indian Wells tournament this year), but I’ll get to check out UO’s new Matt Court!

Matthew Knight Arena (or Matt Court) replaces MacArthur Court aka Mac Court, the well-loved arena where I watched many a basketball game when I was in graduate school. The new arena has been the source of a great deal of controversy due to the avant garde court floor which gives the impression of being within a fir forest. I, for one, love how UO Athletics continue to push the envelope artistically – from the million and one football uniform combinations to this new floor. Better to be at the forefront than the back end!

dreams are made of this

I don’t know how long before this is our reality, but it’s exciting! I especially love the idea of walls and desk surfaces becoming screens that connect us to the work we do, the news around us, and the people we love who are far away.

Imagine how simple and clean our homes and offices will become when all the stand alone computers and televisions and their ubiquitous cords have disappeared. Dreamy!

the office

When I’m not photographing and writing I work as a historical landscape architect for MIG. The firm, which has offices in seven west coast cities including the mother ship in Berkeley, gets the whole gang together once a year for a two-day workshop where we share ideas related to the multi-disciplinary work we do – everything from the how, to the why, to the what. This year I taught a course on new media and social networking and how to apply those tools to the work we do.

It’s a high intensity, jam-packed two days where we get to connect with each other and add some energy and new ideas to the work we do. Fortunately those of us in the Portland office also got to soak up a little of Berkeley’s warm sunshine on the side. Sunlight feeds the soul!

Leading up to the workshop each office was asked to take a group photograph. We brainstormed a “Made in Oregon” theme based on the famous neon sign that graces our city’s skyline and decided to take the photo next to the infamous bench that we observe from our second floor studio each day. The bench’s infamy stems from its center stage role in daily urban dramas including make-out sessions, break-ups, drug deals, fights, lunch meetings, and impromptu band jams just to name a few. Add “group office photo” to that list and you can see this bench is quite the place to be and be seen in the City of Portland (now affectionally becoming known as Portlandia).

Here is the final shot and some outtakes from our photo shoot.
